Post 16 education is not just about academic studies but also includes a wide variety of activities enabling each individual to develop her/his personality. Students will be offered the opportunity to study courses in General Studies and Citizenship but other activities on offer include:
The Aim Higher Programme:
In Greenford, we are providing additional support for all young people with potential to achieve higher-level qualifications, so that they apply, enter and succeed in Higher Education. We are actively encouraging students to access universities with the most demanding entry requirements. We offer students the opportunity to visit universities, participate in Summer Schools and residential experiences.
Accelerated Learners:
As a part of the Aim Higher Programme, potentially high achieving Post 16 students are invited to take part in our Accelerated Learners Programme. Sessions take place after school on one day each week and students are involved in a whole range of experiences that include; taking part in national debating competitions, a film club, an introduction to philosophy, visits by guest speakers and ballroom dancing!
World Challenge
The Post 16 centre at Greenford has a well-established relationship with the World Challenge organisation. Currently, we offer two programmes:
(a) All Year 12 students are involved in a Leadership Challenge course as part of their Induction Programme. This is designed to promote team building, problem solving and communication skills. It takes place on school site.
(b) Year 12 students have the opportunity to be involved in three day Residential experience. This promotes team building and problem solving skills whilst allowing students to experience a range of fun and exciting outdoor activities, such as rock climbing, abseiling, raft building etc. The Residential takes place in The Peak District at an outdoor centre operated by World Challenge in Buxton, Derbyshire. This summer Post 16 students were involved in a World Challenge Expedition to Sri Lanka. The main focus of this trip was to suppport a local community in the clear up operation that is necessary in the aftermath of the Tsunami.

Widening Horizons Programme:
All Year 12 Level 2 students are involved in an exciting, innovative Widening Horizons Programme. This involves a one-day-a-week course delivered by Youth Service training providers. Students currently opt for either a football or a media programme. Both courses lead to Wider Key Skills qualifications and work experience. The football programme also leads to an F.A. recognised coaching award and First Aid Certificate. The media alternative leads to the production of a short film that is then screened at a local cinema
Post 16 Committee:
A democratic opportunity to participate in the running of the Post 16 Centre at Greenford and to influence decisions. Some members of the Post 16 Committee also serve on the School Council.
Sport
There are many opportunities to participate in sports activities and there are very active football and cricket teams.
The PALS Project
PALs at Greenford is a Peer Assisted Learning scheme. Post 16 volunteer students mentors are matched with lower school students who may have experienced some personal difficulties or who may need additional support in school. The mentors undergo a two-day training programme to help them gain the necessary skills to support their mentees. It is generally believed that older students would understand the issues facing younger pupils. |
