Gap Year

Year Out Group
This is a unique portal site providing links to 23 gap related organisations. There is something for everyone with diverse opportunities as art history, drama, conservation community service, languages in the UK as well as the four corners of the globe. None of the 23 listed sites are duplicated in the information that follows.

Worldwide Volunteering
This site promotes a unique software package linking 800 organisations with 250,000 placements in 214 countries. There is a helpful address list of public access points where the software can be seen. If any Careers Teachers are considering purchase then you can either use the helpful on-line demonstration, or ask the views of any local schools that already subscribe.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office
Not specifically gap orientated, but anyone planning to go abroad is well advised to check the travelling overseas section and the drop down country advice menu before embarking. This is particularly recommended for adventure/experience projects.

Gap Year Web site
This may be a publisher of an excellent handbook, but their complimentary site offers extensive advice on gap travel, links to numerous organisations and a helpful search engine facility that is well worth exploring.

Hostel Watch
This site introduces 10 of the best-voted Youth Hostels in Europe, and may well prove to be of interest to the mainland gap traveller. The Youth Hostel Association at www.yha.org.uk includes accommodation in England and Wales, and the International Links pages will inform on other UK organisations as well worldwide accommodation.

Toybox - Street Children
It’s not uncommon to find organisations in support of poverty stricken regions in the third world, but Toybox gap placements focus specifically on a three-month Spanish language programme followed by work with the street children of Latin America.

Voluntary Service Overseas
VSO is an international development charity, which enables people aged 17-70 to share their skills and experience with local people in the developing world. The get informed pages are a good place to begin researching this site with plenty of useful signposting to further information. A useful companion site closer to home is the National Centre for Volunteering at www.volunteering.org.uk.

Au Pair in America
There is an opportunity to enter specific information pages if applying from outside the UK. Topics covered include details on spending a year with an American family, the responsibilities they and you have to each other, as well as the important year round support system.

Springboard
This highly commended site for 16- to 18-year olds provides a wide range of support for young people. This includes a very informative GAP Year Travel section, which explores the pros and cons, advises on making the most of a gap experience, what options are available and even specific essentials for backpackers.
