Educational Maintenance Allowance
If
you are a full time student who is either 16 or 17 you may be entitled
to receive an Education Maintenance Allowance. Eligible students
receive up to £30 per week during term time, a £80 termly
bonus for good attendance/work rate, and an additional £140
for the achievement of set learning agreements.
In
order to receive this allowance you will need to complete an application
form - these can be obtained from your local educational authority
or from the Post 16 Office.
Your
personal tutors will monitor your weekly attendance and review your
progress.
Earn As You Learn
You
could receive an EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance) if:
- Your home address is in the London Borough of Ealing.
- You are in Year 11 or Year 12 and intend staying on in Education
in September 2004.
- You start a course of full-time study (12 guided learning hours
or more a week) at school or college, leading to a qualification
up to and including Level 3 (A Levels).
- You comply with the Conditions of the EMA - see 'What are
the Conditions?'
- You could receive between £5 and £30 a week to cover
term time, if, your family's pre-tax income is below £30,000
during the 2002/2003 financial year.
- If it's below £13,000 your parents will get the maximum
£30 a week.
- You may be entitled to termly bonus payments of £50, subject
to satisfactory attendance and completion of coursework, plus
a £50 bonus on qualification.
- With
the introduction of the National Scheme in September 2004 new
starters on a 2 year programme will be paid a £50 achievement
bonus if they meet their 2003/04 earning goals at the end of the
first year.
Do
You Know?
- It
does not matter where you study.
- You can work part-time and those earnings will not affect your
EMA.
- Your parents will STILL receive Child Benefit.
- Any benefits your family get (Income Support, JSA etc) will NOT
be affected.
When
is it paid?
- The
EMA is paid during term time, up to a maximum of 38 weeks. Both
the weekly allowance and bonuses will be paid directly into your
bank account once the school or college has confirmed that you
have satisfactorily completed the requirements of your Learning
Agreement
- If
you are already in receipt of EMA it will continue to be paid
into your parents account (normally your mother's) unless
your parents authorise weekly payments to yourself.
What
are the Conditions?
- That a Learning Agreement is completed and signed by you, your
parents, and the school or college.
- The Learning Agreement will include Conditions of Payment, homework
and attendance.
- Payments will be stopped if you fail to comply with the Learning
Agreement.
